Julia Savoye Coletta
Danced 1949-1950

Julia Savoye began working at Radio City in 1949. She had attended dance classes since she was a little girl, but it wasn't until she graduated from High School and moved to New York City that she began to seriously study ballet.

After two years of rigorous work, and at the advice of her dance teacher, Julia audtioned for the Radio City Corps de Ballet for "audition practice."

She was surprised that she got the job, not considering herself a "professional dancer," but she made New York City and the Radio City Music Hall her home for the next two years.

Starting pay was fifty-five dollars per week, but as Julia says, "I could live on it." Musicians at the Music Hall (one of whom became Julia's future husband) were making one hundred and twenty five dollars per week.

Performances and reahearsals gave the dancers little free time, and the women were often at the Music Hall for long hours, but, says Julia, "it was like home."
